Kasumi has served as the main character of the Dead or Alive franchise since 1996, being the official protagonist in the first two main games in the Dead or Alive series,and playing very important roles in the rest of the franchise. She has since become the personal favourite of Team Ninja's founder and the series' creator, Tomonobu Itagaki.
