Super Robot Wars Alpha for Sega Dreamcast features a plethora of Mechs, Gundams, Valkyries, and other robot favorites from the anime world. Viewed from an overhead perspective, a 2D map allows players to maneuver their forces in standard turn-based format. When two or more opposing units are within attacking range, a 3D battle sequence takes place. Each unit has distinct weapons, characteristics, and hit points. Additionally, the game features a Karaoke mode, Demo Select, Character Guide and Robot Encyclopedia. The Karaoke mode allows players to listen to the various theme songs from the different shows, while Demo Select lets players watch any of the cut-scenes unlocked in the game. The last two modes provide background information about the characters and robots encountered.
