Initially seen as an experimental project, the Nintendo DS was released November 21, 2004 in North America, named the DS due to the two dual-screens that worked in tandem with gameplay. The Nintendo DS' backward compatibility with Game Boy Advance games quickly established it as Nintendo's handheld successor, and the rival to the Sony PlayStation Portable. Later Nintendo DS models like the DS Lite and DSi would feature more compact designs with brighter screens.
