The Nintendo 3DS XL took what made its predecessor, the Nintendo DS successful and - literally - added another dimension to how people could play games. The system could display stereoscopic 3D effects, giving the illustion of depth without the need of any other accessories. The 3DS XL had a diverse assortment of built-in software like StreetPass, Virtual Console, Miiverse, and video streaming services, and was backwards compatible with Nintendo DS and DSi games. Although the 3DS XL had a slow launch, it would go on to be one of Nintendo's best-selling handheld consoles and have multiple models such as the 3DS XL XL and the 2DS.
