The first Sakura Wars adventure/simulation game was released in late 1996 on the Saturn. Sega and The Red Company then followed that game with a true adventure/simulation sequel in 1997, along with four fan disks, which feature mini games, artwork, and interviews with the series' developers and voice actors. Hanagumi Columns was one of those fan disks, and its name comes from the fact that it's basically a version of Sega's classic Columns, placed in the Sakura Wars universe (Hanagumi means "Flower Branch," which is the name of the group that you control in the Sakura Wars game).
